What You Need to Know About a Pet Fence (Part 1)

When you hear the words Pet Fence, what instantly comes to mind?  Is it only the negative things that you have heard in the media or from people that do not have an Underground Fence for their dogs?  Are they positive things that you have heard from dog owners that have the Electric Dog Fence?  It could be a mixture of both.  What you probably do not hear is the important facts – the ones that will make your Pet Fence RI the most successful for you and your dog.

  1. Training is Essential – Installing an Underground Fence and neglecting to go through the proper training is just as useful as not getting a fence at all.  Without training, your dog will eventually learn to “run through” the electric shock.  After the first few times, he will learn that if he runs fast enough, he can get through the shock, only feel it for a few seconds and move on to whatever it was that caught his attention in the first place.  This negative annotation that a dog can learn without the proper training right away is very difficult to “un-teach”, which is why it is essential to start the proper training on Day 1.
  1. One Step at a Time – While it might be tempting to let your dog have at it in the yard as long as he has his collar on as soon as you have the Pet Fence installed, you should not do this.  Baby steps are imperative to the success of your Underground Fence.  An incremental training system where your dog is slowly introduced to different aspects of the containment system as well as other distractions is the best way to ensure the success of your dog with the Pet Fence RI.
  1. Use the Leash – This might seem counter-intuitive but it is absolutely necessary to use the leash during the training period.  Just like when you are training your dog to sit, heel or obey any other doggy commands, you want his full attention, which is what the leash is for.  If you let your dog outside during the training period without the leash, he is free to run right through the boundaries without knowing any better.  This will only serve to scare him into not wanting to go into your yard – which is not what you want.  The goal of the containment system is for you and your dog to have a fun and trust relationship.
