Lisa, The Electric Dog Fence is a safe and effective means of keeping dogs contained within a yard. As you correctly pointed out it is not recommended for leaving dogs out alone for lengthy periods of time. A couple of "Musts" we recommend are a) proper and complete containment training. This takes place over a few weeks not a few days . b) not letting your dogs off leash until the training is complete, and c) If you are in an area that abuts woods or wildlife that you monitor your dogs activities outside (particularly if they are smaller) around dawn and dusk.
Your trainer is right that the fence is both safe and effective for most dogs and most situations however you want to look at what aspects concern you. Is it that you are not sure the fence will be effective for your dogs? Are you being asked to do the fence containment training and you're not comfortable with giving your dog the corrections? If so then be sure to have a trainer that is competent do so. We feel its best that the owners be the "Good Guy" and the trainer be, well, the trainer and teach the dog at the boundaries.

I have an electric dog fence being placed this Friday, but I am so concerned. I have read good and bad reasons. Our dog trainer says it a safe and effective alternative. Our vet says it is humane. My idea was to let my two dogs have more area to play. I never intend to leave them out alone, I thought it would be nice if we could roam our 1.12 acre property without the pooches taking off, which they do. Both dogs are around 40 pounds. One is 3 years, the other is 10. I just don't know which way to go, any info on actual experiences with the electric dog fence would be much appreciated!
