This video takes you through the steps required to properly repair a wire break in an electric dog fence. This process works for all brands of electric dog fences, including Dog Watch, Dog Guard, electric dog fence, Petsafe, as well as do it yourself systems. A wire break in your system looks something like this. If you find that your wire isn’t completely severed, but only nicked, you’ll need to cut out the damaged area to properly repair it as well.

We will be using a proper splice kit to repair the wire break. Many people think that we simply attach the two broken wires together. We don’t recommend doing it this way because any tension on either of the wires will pull apart the splice. This extra piece of wire will allow us to properly repair the wire break.

First, tie one end of the extra wire to one side of the wire break. Make sure the knot is tight to ensure that tension on the wire won’t pull apart the splice. The ends of the wire may not be even, so cut them to the same length.

Next, strip the ends of the cable, so that half an inch of copper wire is exposed on each. Then, twist the two copper wire ends together. Grab an orange wire nut from the proper splice kit, and twist it on until snug. Next, grab the blue gel capsule, open it up and push the wire nut in, making sure that none of the copper wire is exposed. This prevents the elements from getting at the wire. Spread the wires to either side of the capsule, and close the capsule firmly.

Now that one side of the wire break is fixed, let’s do the same to the other side. Tie the loose end of the extra wire to the perimeter wire. Cut the wires to the same length if need be. Strip each wire a half an inch. Twist the wires together. Screw on the wire nut. Place the wires inside the gel cap. Seal the gel cap, and you’re done.

Notice how the splice stays together, even if there’s tension on either side of the wire. This ensures that the connection won’t be broken in your system, and that is how you do a proper repair of a wire break in your electric dog fence system.
